Sauna stones

The importance of sauna stones

The shape, size, and composition of sauna stones, as well as how they are arranged in the heater, significantly influence the overall sauna experience.

Water and stones create a powerful combination that lets you control the heat and humidity levels in the sauna. To ensure a pleasant and healthy sauna session, it’s essential not only to choose the right heater and maintain proper ventilation but also to regularly care for the sauna stones.

Why choose special sauna stones?

Our selection includes sauna stones made from olivine diabase, a unique magmatic rock composed mainly of olivine and diabase minerals. These minerals provide:

  • Excellent heat storage and release – ensuring a consistent sauna experience.
  • High durability – resistant to extreme temperature changes.
  • Eco-friendliness and safety – free from harmful substances and doesn’t release toxins when heated.
  • Reduced cracking – olivine diabase is less prone to cracking compared to other stones.
  • Improved sauna efficiency and energy consumption – well-chosen stones enhance heat distribution.
  • Longer heater lifespan – suitable stones protect the heater from damage.
  • Enhanced visual appeal – the shape and placement of the stones can also improve the sauna’s overall design.

Why should sauna stones be replaced?

Over time, sauna stones wear out:

  • They may lose their heat conductivity, causing the heater to feel less effective and reducing the quality of steam.
  • Stones can crack or even crumble, especially in electric heaters where damaged stones or fragments can harm the heating elements.
  • Stones at the top of the heater work the hardest, while those at the bottom or sides remain underutilized.

To maintain a high-quality sauna experience, we recommend rearranging the stones at least once a year (if you use the sauna weekly). This helps to:

  • Swap underutilized stones with those that have been exposed to more heat.
  • Replace “dead” stones – they appear lighter and are no longer effective.

How to replace and rearrange sauna stones?

  1. Remove old stones from the heater.
  2. Inspect the stones – discard dull, cracked, or crumbled pieces.
  3. Rearrange the remaining stones and add new ones – place larger stones at the bottom and smaller ones on top.
  4. Ensure sufficient gaps between stones to promote airflow and efficient heater performance.

Conclusion

Regular maintenance and replacement of sauna stones ensure better steam, more even heat distribution, and a longer lifespan for your heater. If you want to enjoy an optimal sauna experience, don’t forget to rearrange and replace the stones once a year 🔥♨️
